Y3 pupils from De Beauvoir Primary School. “ I now know how the sun is a big star and how it works” I loved the art, and the experiment where we saw the insides of magnets” Pupils loved having real scientists in their schools and working creatively with them. The scientists used art to help the pupils to understand complex scientific concepts related to atoms, magnets and the sun. Other pupils created artwork with the Natural History Museum London which will later be included in a visitor trail in the wildlife garden at the museum. Some of the artworks were inspired by workshops delivered in the schools by physicists from Imperial College London, UCL, Cambridge University, led by award winning artist and scientist, Geraldine Cox. The exhibition is the culmination of the STEM ‘Enthuse Partnership’ which was awarded to the PA schools in 2021 to develop high quality science teaching and experiences for their children. Children in all year groups explored a topic in their science curriculum as a springboard to create paintings, sculptures and 3D mobiles. Besides portraits by notable artists such as Arthur William Devis, Johan Zoffany, Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Hickey, the East India Company collections include landscapes by Thomas and William Daniell, William Hodges and Francis Swain Ward, as well as the famous seascapes of George Lambert and Samuel Scott. Paintings continued to be collected during the twentieth century, and include portraits, landscapes and conversation pieces connected with the East India Company and the India Office. In the mid-nineteenth century, the East India Company was disbanded, and became a government department known as the India Office. The eighteenth and nineteenth century collections were acquired by Britain’s East India Company, and were displayed in their headquarters on Leadenhall Street, London. Paintings from non-colonial sources are by contemporary British artists, or are from collections such as Manuscripts or the Punch Archives. Most of the paintings are historically connected with British Colonial rule in Asia from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century. The British Library is the national library of the United Kingdom.
